About Oak Mast-Hoop Trays and Coasters

Hand-crafted by Pert Lowell Co., Inc.

Built by relatives of Percival Lowell, the mast hoops selected for these trays and coasters are virtually identical to those Pert Lowell Co., Inc. crafted for use aboard the America Cup's replica "America", the sloop "Clearwater", one of the many Gloucester fishing schooners, or a windjammer hugging the coast of Maine.

Percival Lowell landed on the banks of the Parker River, Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1635 among a group of pioneers. Sometime later he moved to a spot ten miles northwest and about six miles from the mouth of the Merrimack River, called Salisbury Point, which was later called Amesbury. This half mile of river bank is famous for its ship yards, which have played such a prominent part in the history of our country. Here were built the fastest sailing ships of their day such as the famous POLLY and the frigate ALLIANCE as well as many others.

As with other boat builders of the day, Lowell designed and built all the mast hoops for the sail boats that left his yard. Today Pert Lowell, Co., Inc. carries on the tradition. All their mast hoops are bent from clear, straight-grain oak and laminated for greater strength. The craftsmen working today at Pert Lowell Co., Inc. share a total of over 50 years of hoop making experience.

Each mast-hoop tray or coaster consists of a hand-rolled red-oak hoop with copper fastenings and a contrasting stained mahogany base with cork bottom. Sealed with several protective coats of varnish, these attractive ward-room accessories will withstand everything from coffee to champagne. A handsome addition to any home on land or sea.

Available with 12" ID trays, 5½" ID wine bottle coasters, and 3½" ID drink coasters.
