Although born in the Southwest, Grey spent only her first three and a half years there. It took her two and a half decades to make the return trip
"When we first moved to the Southwest I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Five years in New Mexico and two years in California gave me a keen appreciation for palm trees, cactus, sun, and snow that knows enough to melt by noon time. Being able to play in the garden while admiring the snow on the peaks just 15 miles away is an indescribable pleasure. Having a roadrunner hurry down the sidewalk in front of the house, getting up early for hot air balloon festivals and "frogging around" in the desert in search of flowering plants, wildlife, and new vistas filled our lives for five wonderful years. Southern California was a bit more domestic, although coyotes and other wildlife were ever-present even in a guard-gated condo community. The Pacific was a constant source of pleasure and walks on the beach were never the crowd scene that they can be in New England. I guess I just like living where the sun shines more often than not. I have been fortunate in that I was able to return to the West for many visits (some of the more recent work inspired by those visits can be seen on page 2), and even more fortunate that I finally have been able to return to live in New Mexico, land that I love."
