Selections from a G.E. Grey Watercolor Series |

The family farm is just outside of Wilson, North Carolina, where Grey attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton) during the late sixties. She returns frequently to visit relatives and friends, or to vacation at the shore. Her work has been featured on the front page of The Kenly News, and is sometimes seen at The Tobacco Farm Life Museum in Kenly. "The focus of my rural series is on recording the disappearing sights of rural America. This series began as a way to document the landscape and farm buildings, implements and animals that make up many of my current and childhood memories and which are being replaced by housing developments and suburban sprawl. The rural paintings are more about air and temperature, creating a depth of field but focused on the "portrait" of the foreground subject in a particular moment in time to elicit an emotional response from the viewer. The style is Realist with overtones of Romanticism and Impressionism. The barns have always been an image in my mind's eye and in my life. It is a great personal and almost inexpressible sadness to me to see them disappearing or falling into ruin. Their familiar shapes and colors, the texture of the green tarpaper covering, and their tin roofs all have an almost fairytale quality for me. They are so connected to my every thought of my grandfather and my childhood vacations to the farm that I cannot imagine the landscape without them." G.E.
